DEFTONES Release 'Diamond Eyes' as First Single for New Record
The Deftones have just released the title track to their new studio record 'Diamond Eyes' as the album's first single. The album will mark the first Deftones release since a November 2008 car accident left bassist Chi Cheng in a semi-comatose state. To fill in for Cheng on 'Diamond Eyes', the band enlisted long time friend Sergio Vega to play bass with the group.
The band had been at work on a new record at the time of Cheng's accident, but that material was subsequently put on hold while the band started writing new music. According to lead singer Chino Moreno, "(the band) reconvened about four or five months after Chi's accident, in our rehearsal spot, and before we even got a chance to really talk about, you know, what we wanted to do, if we wanted to, you know, finish up the record that we were working on, or continue as a band or whatever, I mean, everybody just gravitated toward their instruments and started playing. And it just felt like the most natural thing to just dive into the music, and from that day on pretty much we did exactly that. We started writing and a couple of months into it, we had a whole new record's worth of material."
The album recorded with Cheng titled 'Eros' has been put on hold, but Moreno said that the group still plans to release it at some point. Cheng remains in a semi-conscious state at home in Sacramento, California. He does not speak, but sleeps, opens his eyes and sometimes moves his limbs.
'Diamond Eyes' will be released on May 18th.
